West Bengal Woman Invites Villagers to ‘Tree-Marriage’, Raised Tree as her Own “Son”

In a small town called Memari, Purba Bardhaman, a wedding like no other took place. This was the wedding of a banyan tree! It all started with a woman named Rekha Devi who raised this banyan tree from a mere sapling.
Over the years, the tree grew into a towering masterpiece with branches reaching far and wide. Rekha Devi loved this tree as if it were her own child, so much so that she felt it was only fitting to have it married off.
Rekha Devi believed in fate, and fate led her to find a potential bride for her beloved banyan tree. Talk about a match made in heaven, or in this case, the base of a tree!
And that’s not all! Rekha Devi’s husband had promised to arrange a wedding for a banyan tree before he passed away. And as they say, a promise is a promise. With some financial support from the community, Rekha Devi was able to fulfill her husband’s promise.
The wedding took place at the Memari police station in Parijat Nagar, and the entire community was invited to witness this momentous occasion.
The Facts of the Matter
The world is a strange and wondrous place, filled with surprises that never cease to amaze us. And in a small town called Memari, Purba Bardhaman, one such surprise took place. A wedding ceremony, but not just any wedding. This was a wedding that would make even the most skeptical of minds pause and scratch their heads in disbelief. It was the wedding of a banyan tree. Yes, you read that right. A tree. A tree getting married.

WB Woman Raised Tree as her Own Son
Rekha Devi, a woman who loved nature like it was her own flesh and blood, raised this banyan tree from a mere sapling. She put her heart and soul into nurturing it, and it grew into a stunning specimen of a tree. She saw the tree as her own child and couldn’t imagine it not having a wedding.
And so, Rekha Devi set out on a mission to find a suitable match for her beloved tree. She scoured the area and, lo and behold, fate brought her to a potential bride for her ‘son’ near the base of the tree. It was destiny!

Husband’s Last Wish Was to Get Tree Married
And if you thought this story couldn’t get any more heartwarming, there’s more. Before her husband passed away, he made a promise to arrange a wedding for a banyan tree. It may sound like a strange promise to make, but to him, it was a testament to the love and care that one should have for nature.

‘Son’ aka Banyan Tree Gets Married As Per Rituals
With the help of the community, Rekha Devi was able to fulfill her husband’s promise and give her ‘son’ the wedding of a lifetime. The priest, following tradition, dressed the tree in a saree-dhoti and applied vermilion to the top. Can you imagine the sight of a tree dressed in traditional attire? It was truly a sight to behold.
And for those who may doubt the legitimacy of the event, there was an arrangement made for anyone who wanted to attend the wedding. It was a wedding like no other, and Rekha Devi was beyond elated to see her ‘son’ finally getting married.
