Indore Temple Tragedy Death Toll Rises to 35, Municipal Corporation Received Pushback Over ‘Religious Sentiment’
In the Indore temple tragedy, the death toll rose to 35, with new reports surfacing which state that the city’s civic body had received pushback over ‘religious sentiment’. The civic body had reportedly ordered a demolition of the well that caused the tragedy but received massive pushback from the temple citing “religious sentiments” being hurt over the notion of the stepwell’s removal.
A tragic incident occurred at the Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday, when the roof of a stepwell collapsed, leading to the death of 35 people. The scene was one of chaos and devastation, as rescue teams frantically worked to pull survivors from the rubble and debris. In the end, 35 people lost their lives, and one person remains missing, presumed trapped beneath the wreckage.
During the incident, a havan was being performed on the concrete slab covering the stepwell, which also served as the platform of the temple. The concrete slab could not hold the weight of the crowd, resulting in devotees falling into the 40-foot-deep stepwell.
Meanwhile, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are working tirelessly to rescue anyone still trapped under the rubble. MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced Rs 5 lakhs to the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

Tragedy Struck During Ram Navami Havan
On the auspicious day of Ram Navami, scores of devotees had gathered at Beleshwar Mahadev temple in Indore earlier on Thursday. Reportedly, the temple was made after covering a large stepwell as many as fourty years ago. As a havan was being performed on the concrete slab that covered a stepwell, serving as the platform for the temple, little did anyone know that tragedy was about to strike.
With a deafening crash, the concrete slab gave way, unable to bear the weight of at least 30-40 people who had gathered to witness the holy ritual. In an instant, the devotees fell 40 feet down into the deep stepwell.

IMC Had Issued Show-Cause Notice to Temple
The Beleshwar Mahadev temple tragedy in Madhya Pradesh has been further complicated by allegations of illegal construction and negligence on the part of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). The IMC had issued a show-cause notice to the temple trust on April 23, 2022, citing the illegal construction and the need to keep stepwells open and not covered.
“Hurts religious sentiments”: Temple’s Stance
In its response to the IMC’s show-cause notice, the temple responded with, “Restoration of the stepwell is proposed for the public use and making availability of clean and sufficient water. The trust is working on opening.”
It further added that the notice “is hurting Hindu values and an attempt to fan sentiments of Hindu believers.”
Ex-Gratia Announced
As the city of Indore reels under the tragedy, state chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan condoled the deaths of the devotees and announced an ex-gratia to the victims of the tragedy. “An ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh will be given to next of kin of deceased while Rs 50,000 will be given to the injured,” CM Chouhan said.
