Pele, one of the football’s GOAT (Greatest of All Time), died at 82 earlier on Thursday. Following his demise, the current league of legends including Messi, Ronaldo, and others paid their tributes for the icon. The legendary footballing icon, who was the only player to have played and won three FIFA World Cup titles, lost his battle with colon cancer. The 82-year-old was admitted to a hospital due to a respiratory problem in November, and since then, found himself to be in a deteriorating condition.

The tragic announcement of Pele’s death, which caused the football fans across the world to grieve right after the FIFA World Cup, was made by his daughter Kely Nascimento. Taking to Instagram, Kely shared a picture of what appeared to be the family members’ hands on Pele’s body with a caption that read – “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.”

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or Pele, cemented himself as truly the GOAT of the GOATs after playing a crucial rule in FIFA World Cup in 1958. Not only did he help his team to lift the cup, but did so on his debut. He then achieved stardom by taking a hat-trick in a semi-final against France. And help Brazil win their first of five world cups.

For years, football analysts, players of the sport, and fans of the game, have debated over various aspects of the game and about players that have come and gone from the field.

However, the legendary status of Pele has been widely undisputed – which just sheds light on how revered, feared, and respected the icon was. On Thursday, Pele, the GOAT of football, died at 82.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento or Pele, had been battling colon cancer since a very long time and had been recuperating in a hospital since November. Although he was pictured enjoying a game of football, lying on his hospital bed earlier last month, fans of the sport were wary of the legend’s health.

Pele was admitted at the Albert Einstein Hospital in his hometown in Brazil’s Sao Paulo.

Pele’s Daughter Shares Heartbreaking News

On Thursday, Pele’s daughter took to Instagram, and shared the heartbreaking news of her father’s demise. She shared a picture of her family members’ hands on Pele’s hand and captioned the same with, “Everything we are is thanks to you. We love you infinitely. Rest in peace”.

Messi, Ronaldo, Sachin Tendulkar React

Following his demise, footballing legends of the current era reacted by extending their tributes and heartfelt condolences.

Lionel Messi, who has been riding the euphoric wave after helping his team lift the FIFA World Cup 2022, simply shared a picture of him wearing tuxedo, with Pele by his side, and captioned it with, “Rest easy, my dear friend”.

France striker Kylian Mbappe, who helped his team come inches close to lifting the title by hitting three goals in the World Cup 2022 final, mentioned how Pele is the “king of football”.

Meanwhile, Christiano Ronaldo, who had a turbulent World Cup playing for Portugal, said, “The care he always showed for me was reciprocated in every moment we shared, even when we were apart. His memory will endure forever in every one of us who love football”.

Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar, another GOAT from the sporting world of cricket, wrote a heartfelt tribute which read, “A great loss to not just football but to the whole world of sports. There will never be another! Your legacy will live on forever. Rest in Peace Pele”.

Life and Times of Pele

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or simply, Pele, broke into the world of football when he was barely 17. In 1958, the teen helped Brazil lift the World Cup. With a performance of lifetime, Pele scored the only goal in the 1-0 win over Wales in quarters, three goals against France in the Semi Final, and two crucial goals in the 5-2 victory over the Swedish hosts in final.

In 1970, he helped his team lift the title, by scoring the first goal against Italy in the final. As per FIFA, the legendary player played as many as 1,366 games and scored 1,281 goals.
