Gujarat At Least 9 Killed & 32 Injured After Bus Crashes into SUV, Driver Suffered Heart Attack

In Gujarat, at least 9 people were killed and 32 were injured after a bus ended up crashing into an SUV. It is being reported that driver of the SUV suffered heart attack and ended up losing the control of his vehicle. The accident was reported from Gujarat’s Navsari district and occurred earlier on the wee hours of Saturday morning.

According to reports, 9 people were in the SUV out of which 9 people died on the spot due to the horrific impact of the collision. Meanwhile, 32 people occupying the bus were also injured and were rushed to hospitals. While 17 were rushed to hospital in Valsad, 14 others were taken to Navsari hospital and one patient who was seriously injured was rushed to Surat for advance treatment.

The bus carrying 32 people was returning from the Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav event attendees from Surat when the Toyota Fortuner lost control and collided into it head on. The Toyota Fortuner occupants were Ankleshwar residents, and were traveling to their hometown from Valsad.

Following the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and other leaders condoled the deaths. Further, PM Modi also announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for the kin of deceased, and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

The Facts of the matter

At least 9 people were killed and 32 were left injured in a horrific crash in Gujarat. On the wee hours of Saturday morning, a Toyota Fortuner SUV crashed with a bus carrying over two dozens of passengers, when the driver of the SUV suffered a heart attack and lost control over the speeding car.

The SUV ended up colliding with the bus on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai highway in Gujarat’s Navsari.

Injured Taken to Multiple Hospitals

While 9 people who were occupying the Toyota Fortuner, died on the spot. 32 passengers in the bus were injured and rushed to different hospitals. 17 injured persons were taken to a hospital in Valsad, 14 were rushed to a hospital in Navsari and one seriously injured passenger was rushed to Surat for further treatment.

The Victims of the Horrific Accident

The occupants of the SUV were residents for Ankleshwar and were employees at a private firm. They were returning to their hometown from Valsad. Meanwhile, the bus was returning from Pramukh Swami Maharaj Shatabdi Mahotsav, ferrying attendees of the event.

Home Minister Shah, PM Modi Condole Deaths

Following the accident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, took to Twitter to condole the deaths of those who died. “The road accident in Navsari, Gujarat is heart-wrenching. My condolences to those who have lost their families in this incident. The local administration is providing immediate treatment to the injured, praying for their speedy recovery,” Shah tweeted.

Meanwhile, PM Modi also condoled the deaths in the accident, and announced an ex-gratia for the kins of the deceased and the injured. “Pained by the loss of lives due to a road accident in Navsari. My thoughts are with bereaved families. I hope the injured recover soon. An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. Those injured would be given Rs 50,000,” a tweet from the PMO read.

National Highway Road Accidents – A Grim Tale

As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), as many as 4,03,116 road accidents were reported in 2021. Further, deaths in road accidents surged by 16.8%, from 1,33,201 in 2020 to 1,55,622 deaths in 2021.

Interestingly enough, while the National Highways, which accounts to only 2.1% of the total road length in India, reported the highest road accidents. Road accidents on national highway amounted to 30.3% of the overall road accidents.
