Mondrian Artwork in German Art Gallery Found Hanging Upside Down for Last 75 Years

In an absolute ‘OMG!’ development, the Mondrian artwork found at an art gallery in Germany, was recently discovered to be hanging upside down – for the last 75 years! The artwork by Piet Mondrian called ‘New York City 1’ was first displayed at Museum of Modern Art in New York back in 1945, and since 1980, has been on display at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen art collection, Germany.

At a recent event which celebrated Piet Mondrian’s legacy, exhibition curator Susanne mentioned that during her research for a new show by the museum, she found out that the picture that has been earning praises from decades by art enthusiasts, has been hanging upside down.

“The thickening of the grid should be at the top, like a dark sky. Once I pointed it out to the other curators, we realised it was very obvious. I am 100% certain the picture is the wrong way around,” Sussanne was quoted saying.

She also mentioned that correcting the artwork by turning it upside down will ruin the artwork. “The adhesive tapes are already extremely loose and hanging by a thread. If you were to turn it upside down now, gravity would pull it into another direction,” she said.

What caused the shocking error? “It’s impossible to say”, Sussanne said, adding the story being part of the artwork.

The Facts of the Matter

For all its nuisances and subtleties, abstract artwork is one of the most polarizing forms of artwork created by humanity. While it has its share of fans, its critics often call out the “this-doesn’t-even-make-any-sense” aspect of abstract artwork. And a new development has emerged which would give abstract art critics some more fodder.

Oops! Exhibition Curator Realizes Mistake

At a popular German art gallery, an artwork by popular Dutch painter Piet Mondrian called ‘New York City 1’ hung. For years, the artwork attracted hundreds of thousands of enthusiasts, who tried to interpret its abstractions in their own way.

Now, as per new revelations by the exhibition’s curator, Susanne Meyer-Büser, the artwork has been hanging upside down – for the last 75 years!

What It Is VS What It Should Be

The artwork features bright asymmetrical lines of red, black, blue and yellow tape on a white background – showing the skyline of a New York from a time gone by. However, when Susanne Meyer-Büser was doing a round of research, she found that the artwork was hanging upside down.

“The thickening of the grid should be at the top, like a dark sky. Once I pointed it out to the other curators, we realized it was very obvious. I am 100% certain the picture is the wrong way around,” she was quoted in a Guardian report.

How the Mistake was Realized?

One of the clues that made the case for the artwork being displayed upside down was a picture taken in 1944 which shows the artwork with blue, yellow, and red strips at the top. Whereas, in the past seven decades, the said strips have been featured at the bottom.

Despite the decades-old mistake being accepted and acknowledge, the exhibition has decided to not course correct and intends to do what it has always done – show the artwork upside down.

One of the main reasons to do so is to not risk it being destroyed.

“Part of work’s story..”

“The adhesive tapes are already extremely loose and hanging by a thread. If you were to turn it upside down now, gravity would pull it into another direction. And it’s now part of the work’s story,” museum curator Susanne Meyer-Büser was quoted saying.
