In a First, Inmates of Mental Institute in Chennai Tie Knot, Receives Gift from TN Minister

In a fascinating development, two inmates of a mental institute in Chennai tied the knot, and even received gift in form of jobs from Tamil Nadu minister.

The development is special in all ways and meanings and forms of the word, as never before in the over 200-year-old history of the Institute of Medical Health, Chennai, has a couple taken a leap of faith. The two inmates, who were brought to the institute two years back for different reasons, fell in love with each other over the course of their recovery.

The couple, Mahendran, 42, and Deepa, 36, were both brought to the Institute for different reasons. While Mahendran’s mental health had been burdened because of bitter fights between his relatives over his family’s properties, Deepa was dealing with grief of her father’s death in 2016, and the sense of meaningless she had, despite being with her mother and sister.

The couple received treatment, and a few months back, they were transferred to ‘Half Way Home’, a building within the institute, for those who are literally “halfway home” thanks to their progress.

“It was love at first sight”, Mahendran was quoted saying by News 18, while Deepa called meeting Mahendran nothing short of a “miracle”.

The Facts of the Matter

“Love triumphs all”, phrases like this have been used to death, so much so that often they lose their meaning. However, in some instances, these phrases find a new form and shape, and reaffirm the transcendent glory of ‘love’.

Like the story of Deepa and Mahendran, a couple who met at a mental institute, and have broken the institute’s over 200-year-old tradition of no marriages by tying the knot recently. The story comes from Institute of Medical Health, Chennai, the second largest mental institute and hospital in India.

Meet the Bride & Groom

Mahendran, who is currently working with the daycare centre of the Institute of Medical Health, was brought about two years ago. Like many inmates of the hospital, he had no idea how he was brought. His mental health was burdened by his family disputes over his father’s property.

Meanwhile, his newly-married wife Deepa, was brought to the institute around the same time. She was finding it difficult to deal with the prolonged grief of her father’s demise that occurred in 2016. Despite living with her sister and mother, she found meaninglessness and despondence everywhere she looked.

Being Shifted to “Half Way Home”

In the course of two years, the two responded well to the nurturing environment of the institute. They were soon shifted to “Half Way Home”, a building within the institute meant specially for those who are literally “halfway home” in the course of their treatment, in short, a place for inmates who are abandoned by their families or face certain stigmas.
