Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold Medal, Claims She “Worked on Snatch Preparations” As Prep for CWG

Mirabai Chanu Wins Gold Medal

Olympic medalist won a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games and claimed that she “worked on snatch preparations” during the road to the commonwealth games. The Olympics silver medalist etched history by clinching a gold medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in the 49kg category. With an aggregate of 201kg in snatch and clean and jerk, she created a Commonwealth Games Record and ended up clinching the gold medal.

After making the country proud once again by winning the gold medal, she told media about her preparations for the event. “There is a difference between the Olympics and Commonwealth Games. Everybody knows that CWG is a bit easy for me, but I trained hard for it as well. The process was to improve my game for the future and for that it was a fight within,” she was quoted by an MSN report.

The ace weightlifter from India, she lifted 84 kg in her first attempt in the snatch round and never looked to be in trouble when compared to her opposition who were trailing extensively. However, she continued on her rich vein of form and lifted 88kg on second attempt, and then 109kg to emerge as the gold medal winner.

The Facts of the Matter

“Ek hi dil hai, kitne baar jitogi?” netizens on social media wrote in ecstasy. While the literal meaning of the words may drown in translation, the overwhelming sentiments displayed by the Indian consensus on social media proved one thing. It proved how Indian fans are rallying for the otherwise short-heighted 4’11” weightlifter Mirabai Chanu, who’s a giant at the weightlifting competitions.

And for all the right reasons, as the Manipur-based weightlifted made the country proud by clinching the gold medal at the 86 kg weightlifting category.

Round One, Lifting 84 kg Successfully

Continuing on her rich form following her silver-medal winning stint at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the weightlifter never looked in trouble. For her first attempt, she didn’t even bat an eye and lifted 84 kg successfully.

Good Gets A Little Better

Things went from good to great form that point. She went on to equalize her personal best at snatch by lifting 88kg. At the clean and jerk events, she once again showed how she overshadowed every weightlifter in her class. She emerged as the only weightlifter to have an entry weight over 100 kg.

She first lifted 109 kg in her first attempt, and only went on to improve the already impressive feat by lifting 113kg. For her third attempt, all eyes were on her as she went on to attempt 115kg. However, she faltered and couldn’t do so.

“World championships primary target”

It should be noted that Mirabai is eyeing the world championships and is looking to hit the 90kg mark. “The World Championships is my primary target. Even the Olympic qualifiers are going to be held around the same time, so, I will be focusing on those from now on,” she was quoted saying.

Mirabai’s Road to CWG 2022

Her snatch technique looked impeccable today, and she went on to share that she had been working on the same since a while. “The training process was a bit different as after returning from Tokyo, I worked on my snatch technique which I applied tonight. It was a fight within to improve for the future,” she said.

India’s Performance at CWG 2022 So Far
