Manipur Landslide: At Least 8 Soldiers Dead, Several Missing as Landslide Hits Army Camp

In a concerning development pertaining to the Manipur landslide that recently hit a territorial army camp, at least 8 soldiers were confirmed dead with several still reported missing. The calamity was reported from Noney district, about 65 km from the state capital Imphal. The calamity struck the camp sometime around the wee hours of Thursday. At least 46 people have been reported missing due to the incident.

Following the incident Manipur CM N. Biren Singh took to Twitter and gave an update on the incident. “Called an emergency meeting to assess the situation of the landslide in Tupul today. The search and rescue operation is already underway. Let’s keep them in our prayers. Ambulances along with doctors have also been dispatched to assist in the operation,” his tweet read.

According to a New Indian Express report, the landslide struck the company’s camp set up near the Tupul railway station. The camp was set up to protect the currently under-construction railway project from Jiribam to Imphal.

While eight army men were reported dead and dozens of army men were confirmed to be not yet rescued, thirteen individuals were rescued. Kohima-based spokesperson Lt. Col. Sumit Sharma was quoted saying, “Full scale rescue operations are in progress by columns of Indian Army and Assam Rifles. Thirteen individuals have been rescued,

The Facts of the Matter

As many states in the nation continue to report incessant rainfall due to the onset of the Monsoon, Manipur’s army camp was struck by a landslide, which killed several troops. The toll continues to increase with time and so far at least eight people have been reported dead.

45 People Still Missing

After the seventh body was recovered, Sub Divisional Officer, Solomon L Fimate was quoted in a Times Now report saying, “Seven bodies have been recovered so far. Rescued people being shifted to hospital. Around 45 persons are still missing.” The landslide was triggered by incessant rainfall that continues to lash out on Manipur’s Noney district.

Matters Can Get Worse

According to reports, the landslide’s indirect consequence has been the obstruction of the river flow. A dam-like water body has been created which could lead to further flooding if and when the debris get cleaned up. The river in question is Ijei river and the obstructed water can later flow into the low-lying areas of the location.

Manipur CM Provides Update, PM Modi Offers Condolences

Following the calamity, Manipur CM N Biren Singh took to Twitter and wrote, “Called an emergency meeting to assess the situation of the landslide in Tupul today. The search and rescue operation are already underway. Let’s keep them in our prayers today. Ambulances along with doctors have also been dispatched to assist in the operation.”

In subsequent tweets, the Manipur Chief Minister confirmed that personnel of National Disaster Response Force have been deployed to rescue the affected. He also announced receiving calls from Prime Minister Modi who took the stock of situation on call. In a tweet, the Indian prime Minister himself offered his condolences to the bereaved.
