UP Conman Uses Pics with PM to Dupe People of Crores of Rupees, Even Gets Rs 2 Crore Aide from Govt
The UP police recently arrested a conman who made use of pictures he got clicked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to dupe people of crores of rupees, and even receive a Rs 2 crore aid from the government!
In a tale that would make even the most devious con artist blush, Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’, a businessman, has been arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s special task force (STF) for allegedly duping people and organisations by claiming to have links to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The STF claims that Rai and his aides went to great lengths to forge documents with false references to the PMO, in order to hoodwink their victims.
But Rai’s luck ran out when the police received information that he had taken a whopping Rs 6 crore from a Delhi-based businessman, Gaurav Dalmiya, promising to get his name cleared from a probe being carried out against him by a central investigation agency.
Adding to the intrigue, Rai runs an NGO, that promises to make make Ghazipur self-sufficient. The NGO, called Youth Rural Entrepreneur Foundation (YREF), had recently received approval from the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying to set up a Rs 5.85-crore Breed Multiplication Farm (BMF).
The Facts of the Matter
The recent arrest of businessman Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’ by the Uttar Pradesh Police’s special task force (STF) has once again highlighted the audacity of conmen who use the name of the Indian Prime Minister to execute their fraudulent schemes.
The arrest comes just weeks after another conman, Kiran Bai Patel, who posed as a senior official of PMO, and took the Jammu and Kashmir administration for a ride.
UP Conman with “Links to PMO” Arrested
Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’, a businessman from Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, recently found himself in hot water after the Uttar Pradesh Police’s special task force (STF) caught him red-handed. It turns out that Rai had been collecting money from unsuspecting people and organizations by claiming to have links to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
How the Hammer Fell on ‘Sherpuria’
Rai’s downfall began when he tried to con a Delhi-based businessman named Gaurav Dalmiya. According to reports, Mr. Rai promised to clear Mr. Dalmiya’s name from a probe being carried out against him by a central investigation agency in exchange for Rs 6 crore.
The police had received a tip-off about Rai’s illegal activities, and they were waiting for him when he arrived at Kanpur railway station. The STF promptly arrested him and handed him over to the Vibhuti Khand police station. Two days prior, Rai’s aide, Kashif, was also arrested in Noida after the police conducted searches at multiple locations.

Rai’s “NGO” Got Aide from Govt
It turns out that Rai ran an NGO, with allegations that he has routed his ill-gotten gains through his NGO.
But wait, it gets even worse! The NGO run by Rai is called Youth Rural Entrepreneur Foundation (YREF), and according to a December 1, 2022, letter to YREF reviewed by prominent news outlet, The Indian Express, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying approved the company’s proposal to set up a Rs 5.85-crore Breed Multiplication Farm (BMF).
And get this – the department approved payment of Rs 2 crore as financial assistance in the form of subsidy through the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB)!

Had Pictures with BJP Leaders, Wrote Book on PM Modi
According to a report in Dainik Bhaskar, Sanjay Rai ‘Sherpuria’ had photographs taken with various leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), including J.P. Nadda, Anurag Thakur, Keshav Prasad Maurya, and Mohan Bhagwat.
Rai has also authored a book about Modi, titled “Divya Drishti Modi”, The Wire reported.
