South Korean Woman Passes Driving Test After 959 Attempts and Spending Over Rs 1 Lakh
A South Korean passed her driving test on her 960th attempt and spending thousands of dollars in its pursuit, embodying the notion of “where there is a will, there’s a way”. While the incident dates back to over ten years, it recently resurfaced on Reddit and other social media platforms, prompting netizens to satiate their curiosity and look up more about the woman on the internet.
The woman, named Cha Sa-soon, had a dream. But this wasn’t your average dream – this was a driving dream that took 960 attempts to achieve. Yes, you read that right – 960 attempts! Cha Sa-soon wasn’t one to give up easily.
She took the written test every day for three years until she finally passed on the 860th attempt. But that was only half the battle. The practical test was a whole other beast, and she had to take it 10 times before she could finally say she was a licensed driver.
The cost of her obsession to pass a driving test? A whopping £11,000 (Rs 1.1 5lakhs)! But hey, at least her vegetable-selling business was in good hands, or should we say, good wheels.
Cha Sa-soon’s determination didn’t go unnoticed either. Her story captured the hearts of people around the world and even earned her a brand new car worth $16,800 from Hyundai.
The Facts of the Matter
We’ve all heard the saying, “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” Well, Cha Sa-soon took this mantra to a whole new level when she embarked on a journey to obtain her driver’s license.
Despite failing the written test over 800 times and the practical test 10 times, she refused to throw in the towel. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the lengths we’ll go to achieve our goals, even if it means spending £11,000 (Rs 1.15 lakhs) and taking nearly 1,000 driving exams.
Unlikely Celebrity in South Korea
In a small village surrounded by mountains in South Korea, there lives an unlikely national celebrity: Cha Sa-soon. She is known for achieving a remarkable feat that caused many to shake their heads in astonishment and then smile. After failing her driver’s test hundreds of times, she finally got her license on her 960th try.
Hyundai Presented Cha Sa-soon a Car
Grandma Cha’s story touched the hearts of people everywhere. Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, South Korea’s leading carmaker, launched an online campaign asking people to post messages of congratulations. Thousands of messages poured in, and in early August, Hyundai presented her with a $16,800 car.

The Turbulent Path & The Hard Work
Grandma Cha had always envied people who could drive, but it wasn’t until she was in her 60s that she decided to pursue her dream. She tackled the first obstacle, the 50-minute written test consisting of 40 multiple-choice questions on road regulations and car maintenance. It proved to be insurmountable, as she failed the test 949 times, but her scores steadily crept up.
To help her overcome the hurdle, the teachers at Jeonbuk Driving School pitched in, giving her extra lessons and painstakingly explaining the terminology. Her persistence paid off, and finally, she got her license.

Driving Instructor Opens Up
Despite her accomplishment, some were concerned about the possibility of her endangering others on the road. But for Cha, getting her license was a dream come true, and nothing could dampen her spirits.
“When she finally got her license, we all went out in cheers and hugged her, giving her flowers. It felt like a huge burden falling off our back. We didn’t have the guts to tell her to quit because she kept showing up,” her instructor was quoted saying, back in 2010.
