Lucile Randon, World’s Oldest Known Person, Dies Aged 118 After Surviving COVID in 2021

Lucile Randon, the world’s oldest known person, died at an age of 118, a year after she survived COVID-19. Lucile, who was famously known as Sister Andree, was a nun, born in France in February 1904. The France-based nun saw the two world wars, the collapse of the Soviet Union, the fall of the Berlin War, the Great Depression, the death of the monarch Queen Elizabeth II, and the advent of technology as seen today.

According to reports, Lucile Randon passed away in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon, France. David Tavella, spokesperson of Sainte-Catherine-Labouré nursing home where the elderly nun lived, said, “There is great sadness but … it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s a liberation.”

Born in France at a time when the first World War was still a decade away, she started her journey when New York subway was not a thing. Over the course of years, she worked as a teacher, and was also appointed as a governess. In the second world war, she took responsibilities of taking care of children.

A significant part of her life was her spending time in religious service and doing charitable acts for the people around her. After surviving COVID-19, she spoke to newspapers and said, “I didn’t even realise I had it.”

The Facts of the Matter

The world mourns at the demise of Sister Andree, the world’s oldest known person, and the world’s oldest nun. Born Lucile Randon, Sister Andree passed away in her sleep at an age of 118. She was residing at a nursing home in Toulon, France.

After her passing, the spokesperson of Sainte-Catherine-Labouré nursing home where Lucile resided, was quoted by AFP saying, “There is great sadness but… it was her desire to join her beloved brother. For her, it’s a liberation.”

The Humble Beginnings

Born in February, 1904, Lucile was part of a Protestant family and the only girl among three brothers. She was born in Ales, France. According to reports, her happiest of memories was when her two brothers returned after end of the World War 1, which was a decade later after her birth.

On her 116th birthday, Lucile told AFP, “It was rare, in families, there were usually two dead rather than two alive. They both came back.” One of her other happiest of memories was her work as a governess in Paris, France. She worked for the children of the wealthy families during her time as the governess.

Being Baptised

At an age of 26, Lucile baptised and became a Catholic Christian. She had a desire to “go further” in the world of charities and helping those who needed the most. She joined the Daughters of Charity order of nuns when she was 41.

After turning into a Catholic, she was assigned to a Vichy-based hospital where she went on to work for the next 31 years of her life.

Lucile Randon’s Secret of Long Life

During the final part of her life, she went to Toulon-based nursing home where she was host of various prayers, mealtime visits, and visits from dignitaries as well.

While her secret to a long life can be debated, she once spoke about how work helped her with being active. “People say that work kills, for me work kept me alive, I kept working until I was 108,” she said, and added, “People should help each other and love each other instead of hating. If we shared all that, things would be a lot better.”
