Bomb Blast in Pakistan’s Peshawar Mosque Leaves At Least 28 Dead, Over 150 Injured

In a horrific blast reported from a mosque in Pakistan’s Peshawar, at least 28 persons were reported dead while 150 were reported injured. The explosion reportedly rocked the mosque in located in Peshawar’s Police Lines area killing several police officers who were attending the afternoon prayers on Monday. As per reports, a significant number of police were reportedly killed and injured in the explosion.

According to Peshawar police chief Ijaz Khan, the mosque was situated in a compound which included the police force’s headquarters along with its counter-terrorism department. The police chief said that traces of bomb explosives were found inside the mosque and the probability of a suicide bomber cannot be ruled out. An investigation in the matter has been launched.

As per Ijaz Khan, some 300-400 officials were located in the area at the time of the bomb blast. Due to the security lapse, the bomb exploded later this afternoon, killing several and injuring hundreds. The injured were later rushed to the Lady Reading Hospital, and many of the injured are reported to be in a critical condition.

Meanwhile, governor Haji Ghulam Ali condemned the attacked, and asked people to donate the blood for the injured, adding that their actions would be a “favour for the police”.

The Facts of the Matter

It is no surprise that terrorism in and stemming from Pakistan is not only a pose a threat to the country but poses a concern for the entire world. In yet another terror activity reported in Pakistan, at least 28 people died and another 150 were left injured after a bomb explosion rocked a mosque in Peshawar.

The incident took place inside a mosque compound located within the compound of the local police force’s headquarters and its counter-terrorism department.

Explosion During Afternoon Prayers

The explosion occurred sometime during the afternoon prayers when at least 300-400 police officials were near the vicinity of the mosque.

Peshawar top cop Muhammad Ijaz issued a statement on television that the mosque was running on nearly full capacity and was occupied by nearly 300 people. Further, he was also quoted saying, “We cannot at the moment confirm there was a suicide attacker but we need to conduct more investigations. However, there is a possibility of there being a suicide bomber.”

Mosque Located in City’s Red Zone

It should be noted that the mosque is situated in the city’s read zone. The red zone holds several important government buildings including the residence of the Chief Minister, Governor, along with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly building.

In visuals of the incident gone viral, half of the mosque’s wall appears to be completely caved in. The mosque compound is filled with debris of bricks and mortar as locals rush over the debris to escape and rescue others. The incident took place sometime around 1.30 pm local time.

Locals Urged to Donate Blood

As per Peshawar deputy commissioner Shafiullah Khan, the death toll could be more as “more bodies are taken out”. The injured meanwhile, have been rushed to Lady Reading Hospital. Authorities have been urging locals to go out in numbers and donate blood as a favour to the police.
