A Karnataka-based teacher called a student a ‘terrorist’ in the class, and when confronted by the student, called him like ‘his son’ in a meek voice. The professor in question has reportedly been suspended after the video of the student’s outburst for being called a terrorist emerged on social media. According to reports, the student in question is a Muslim, who took offence on being called a ‘terrorist’.
The incident was reported from Manipal Institute of Technology, Udipi, and occurred earlier on Friday. The professor in question asked student his name, and realizing that the student is a Muslim, said, “Oh, you are like Kasab”. For the unversed, Kasab, or Ajmal Kasab, was one of the perpetrators of 26/11 who was hanged in 2012.
In the video gone viral, the student in question can be seen making his case and sharing his plight on being a Muslim who’s targeted everyday. “Being a Muslim and facing this everyday is not funny,” the student screamed while confronting the teacher.
“Will you talk like that to your son? Will you call him a terrorist? How can you call me like that in front of so many people? This is a class, you’re professional, and you’re teaching. You can’t call me that,” the student further demanded, as the teacher remained polite and apologised.
The Facts of the Matter
In an increasing polarizing world, not just nation, we often forget how reducing a person down to their religion or economic background, is not only undemocratic, but a vile abuse of their human rights. In one such situation, a student in Karnataka stood up to his teacher, who reportedly likened him to Kasab, a terrorist who was hanged in 2012 for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
The incident reportedly occurred at Manipal Institute of Technology, Udipi, and took place earlier on Friday, only to be picked up by media on Monday after the video of the student’s confrontation went viral.
“You are like Kasab”
According to reports, the professor in question asked the student his name. On hearing a Muslim name, the professor remarked that the student is like “Kasab”, an international terrorist who was hanged back in 2012.
In the widely-shared video, which does not show the teacher making the remark, but only the student standing up to him, the latter accuses the professor of belittling his religion by the comparison to terrorist.
“26/11 Not Funny”: Teacher Stands Up to Professor
The student confronts his professor and can be heard saying, “26/11 was not funny. Being a Muslim in this country and facing all this every day is not funny, sir. You can’t joke about my religion, that too in such a derogatory manner. It’s not funny sir, it’s not.”
The teacher then further downplays his remark by appeasing to the student’s emotion by saying he is just like his son.
Teacher Likens Student to his Son
The student is seen not succumbing to the emotional pressure, and continues with his rant. “Will you talk to your son like that? Will you call him by the name of a terrorist?” the student asks. The professor meekly replies “no”.
To this, the student continues, “Then how can you call me like that in front of so many people? You are a professional, you are teaching. A sorry doesn’t change how you think or how you portray yourself here.”

Professor Suspended, Inquiry Initiated
After the video of the confrontation went viral, the institute reportedly suspended the assistant professor. Meanwhile, the student was offered counselling for the incident he was part of. In a subsequent statement, the university mentioned that there is a zero tolerance for such behaviour, and added how it is proud of the diversity on the campus.
“The institute has already initiated an inquiry into the incident and the concerned staff has been debarred from classes till the inquiry is over. We would like everyone to know that the institute does not condone this kind of behavior and this isolated incident will be dealt with in accordance with the laid down policy,” the statement read.
