Jharkhand Locals Garland Teacher with Shoes, Blacken Face for Allegedly Showing ‘Porn to Female Students’

In Jharkhand, a teacher’s face was blackened and garlanded with shoes for allegedly showing ‘porn to female students’. The incident, which occurred earlier on Wednesday, was reported from a middle school in Noamundi block located in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum. According to reports, the locals resorted to shaming the teacher after no action was taken by the police based on the written complaint filed.

The matter came to the fore after as many as six female students from a middle school in Noamundi block confided to their parents and informed that their teacher not only showed them pornographic videos, but also touched them inappropriately.

Enraged villagers filed a written complaint against the accused on Wednesday this week. However, allegedly there was inaction on the end of police which enraged the locals further. Taking matters in their own hands, the locals decided to garland the teacher with shoes and blacken his face, a common practice of shaming an individual which is still observed in many corners of the country.

The locals also staged a dharna outside the police station, seeking justice for the girl students and an arrest of the alleged accused. Badajamda police station office-in-charge Basudev Toppo told media that the matter is being investigated.

The incident comes just days after a teacher in Jharkhand assaulted class 6 students with wooden canes.

The Facts of the Matter

The Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, 2009 prohibits any child being subjected to physical or mental harassment. Further, Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act goes on to prescribe punishment when one is found accused and guilty of cruelty to children.

Despite laws and policy framework against mental and physical harassment against students, teachers continue to misuse their authority and numerous students in India continue to be harassed.

In one such incident reported from Jharkhand, a teacher allegedly showed pornographic content to female students, and was later blackened by irate locals.

6 Female Students Allege Horrific Harassment

As many as six female students of a middle school in Noamundi block located in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum confided to their parents and claimed that their teacher showed them pornographic content and touched them inappropriately.

The concerned locals filed a complaint against the accused, and even touched base with the deputy commissioner of police earlier on Wednesday.

However, enraged over the fact that there was no action taken against the teacher, the locals decided to take matters in their own hands.

Accused Garlanded with Shoes

Locals, mostly women, ambushed the alleged accused and in a bit to shame him, smeared ink on his face and garlanded him with shoes. The accused was further paraded all across the village which comes under the jurisdiction Badajamda police.

Irate over the fact that the accused was not served justice, the locals staged a dharna outside the police outpost, demanding the accused to be sent to jail.

Women Stage Dharna, Still No Arrest

Scores of women staged the dharna for hours and eventually Circle Inspector Virendra Ekka tried to pacify them.

While no reports have emerged mentioning the accused’s arrest, Badajamda police station officer-in-charge, Basudev Toppo, told media that the matter is being probed.

The incident occurred the same week as another school teacher in Jharkhand allegedly assaulted class 6 students. The assault was so brutal that as many as 13 students were rushed to the health center. The accused was identified as Vikas Siril, who was angry when the class 7 students didn’t take his orders.
