Indore: Visually Impaired Student Gets Rs 47 Lakh Package from Microsoft, Aims to Work with AI
In an inspiring development reported from Indore, a visually impaired student recently got a Rs 47 lakh package from Microsoft. The inspiring student in question, Yash Sonkia, aims to work with AI and “do something great for the world”. A student of Sri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science’s (SGSITS) computer science department, Yash recently aced his exams with an impressive CGPA of 7.2 CGPA.
The story of Yash turning adversity into opportunity and triumphing all odds is something one may only see in a television show or film. The 25-year-old engineering student is 100% visually impaired. While speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, Yash’s father Yashpal Sonkia mentioned how his entire family was euphoric 25 years ago when Yash was born. However, happiness was eclipsed just a day later when he found out that his son is partially visually impaired due to glaucoma disease.
By the age of 8, Yash lost his eyesight completely due to intense pressure on his eyes. Since his early years, Yash had been interested in technology as it has the ability to change and influence the lives of people.
Speaking about getting a job offer from the tech giant, Yash was quoted saying, “I took time to process the information, and then it was like… I have a job now.”
The Facts of the Matter

25 years ago, when Yash Sonkia was born with glaucoma disease, his entire family was heartbreaking, knowing that he may eventually have eyesight related issue. At age 8, Yash completely lost his sight due to intense pressure.

When Going Gets Tough, Tough Gets Going
However, as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Fast forward some seventeen years, and Yash was offered a package of Rs 47 lakhs from tech giant Microsoft, and became the first visually impaired student in Indore to receive the staggering package.
A student of Sri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science, Yash completed his engineering recently with an impressive 7.2 CGPA. Meanwhile, he had also compiled list of IT companies he would like to work in. Tech giant Microsoft was in the list and like a dream come true, Yash got a job offer from Microsoft.

The Recruitment Drive
Yash reportedly sat in Microsoft’s open campus placement drive. The placement process started in April and Yash gave three offline rounds in April-May at the Bengaluru campus of the IT company. His final round was an online one in which he was made to code, something he was passionate about. He came through the placement drive with flying colours and received a package of Rs 47 lakhs.
Yash’s Father Owns Eatery Outside District Court
Yash’s father, Mr. Yashpal Sonkia has a small eatery outside the district court. Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, Yashpal Sonkia mentioned that his dream was that his son receives a placement offer from a reputed company, and that he feels proud that his son fulfilled his dream by receiving an offer from Microsoft.

First Visually Impaired Student to Receive Job Offer Close to 50 L
It should be noted that Yash is the first visually-impaired student from his college who has received an offer close to Rs 50 lakhs. Prior to Yash, another student had received a Rs 44 lakh job offer. In a Free Press report, Yash was quoted saying, “I took time to process the information, and then it was like… I have a job now.”
Having already cleared JEE and JEE advanced, Yash wanted to stay in his hometown with his family. From an early age, Yash understood that technology can influence countless people across the world, and is now looking forward to work in the field of Artificial Intelligence.
