Heartbreaking Video of Grieving Mother Elephant Carrying Corpse of Dead Calf for 2 Days Goes Viral

A heartbreaking video of a grieving female elephant carrying the corpse of her dead calf for two days has gone viral on social media, evoking some gut-wrenching responses from the netizens. The mother elephant was reported to be roaming around the tea-estates of Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal.

In one of the videos gone viral, the mother elephant can be seen struggling to lift its dead calf with her trunk in Jalpaiguri’s Ambari Tea Estate. In the video gone viral, the elephant can be seen struggling to left the dead calf. After some struggle, the mother elephant moves away with the calf’s carcass and disappears into the thick tea gardens of the Jalpaiguri tea estates.

Reportedly, the calf passed away earlier on Saturday in Chunabhati tea garden near Banarhat town in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri. For the next two days, the mother elephant has chosen not to abandon the carcass of the dead calf and has been seen roaming around tea gardens with the elephant herd that has 30-35 more such elephants.

Teams from forest department have so far been unsuccessful with recovering the carcass of the dead calf and assist the grieving mother by steering her to the forest. Despite the failed attempts, the teams have continued to keep a watch on the elephant.

The Facts of the Matter

Elephants are known as one of the most empathetic mammals on the planet. Tuskers have exhibited the ability of sharing someone else’s feelings and experiences depending on situations. This is often exhibited when they treat their sickly, family members, or the deceased from their herd.

Recently, a mother elephant is making the buzz for doing just the same. The grief-struck mother has been seen roaming around West Bengal tea estates, carrying the corpse of its dead calf and not letting it go for the last two days.

Grief-struck by the demise of her calf, the mother elephant was spotted in Jalpaiguri district’s tea estates refusing to leave its dead calf. In the last two days, the devastated elephant mother has been spotted traveling kilometers carrying the lifeless body of her calf.

Earlier last week, news agency ANI took to Twitter and shared the video of the devastated elephant carrying the carcass of the dead calf in Jalpaiguri’s tea estates.

Netizens react to Heartbreaking Video of Mother Elephant

Netizens were quick to express their own grief on the video and noted how often animals are more expressive than humans when it comes to showing emotions like grief.

“Entire herd has joined grieving female”

An India.com report quoted Shyama Prasad Pandey, Wildlife Trust of India-SPOAR elephant corridor monitoring project coordinator saying, “Elephants are known to take extra care for their calves. We have come across several incidents of elephants pulling all stops to rescue their calves from any kind of distress. This incident is also an indicator of elephant behaviour. What is significant here is that the entire herd has joined the grieving female.”

Drone Used to Monitor Situation

According to a tea garden official, the mother elephant reached the Red Bank Tea Garden with the calf’s corpse and has been wandering around and about the garden. Interestingly, the mother elephant was all by herself with the calf, and was later joined by 30 elephants. For now, the forest department officials are monitoring the matter using drones.
