Shedding light on the struggles associated with starting a business from scratch, Singh shared that its doubly tougher if one is building a brand “for women, with women, as a woman”.

“Fifteen years back when I first thought of starting up, I wanted to start a lingerie business. While that business plan never saw the light of day, in all my interactions with industry experts and venture capitalists, I realized something:

Yes, it’s tough to build something. It is just a little bit tougher if you’re building for women, with women as a woman. There are fewer role models and representation truly matters in shaping our ambitions!” her post read.

The Facts of the Matter

As India sees more unicorns (companies’ worth valuation of over $1 billion), there’s another side to this coin. India has the worst labour force participation rate (LFPR) by women. The LFPR is basically percentage of the total women within working age that are actually seeking work or are employed.

At 21% India has the worst female participation rates. Countries that India often compares itself to such as Bangladesh, China, Indonesia have over two to three times the rate. One other way to look at it is 79% of Indian women don’t even seek employment.

Vinteeta Singh on Creating Brand “for Women, with women, as woman”

In her post, Singh revealed that she actually intended to create a lingerie business, which never saw the light of the day. “

Fifteen years back when I first thought of starting up, I wanted to start a lingerie business. While that business plan never saw the light of day, in all my interactions with industry experts and venture capitalists, I realized something: Yes, it’s tough to build something. It is just a little bit tougher if you’re building for women, with women as a woman. There are fewer role models and representation truly matters in shaping our ambitions!”, her post read.

“Best way to give back is to pay forward”

Being a woman entrepreneur herself, Singh mentioned how her business SUGAR Cosmetics in the last seven years “survived all kinds of challenges including biases and stereotypes,” just as she has. She further added, “..I have learnt that the best way to give back is to pay it forward – and to share real stories of what it’s been like starting to build SUGAR – way before D2C was cool – with the hope that some of these stories will resonate with the audience of this platform and give a few of them the drive to push past what seems unbreakable.”

“Struggle is real”

She also noted how building a startup, excelling in one’s career, or surviving a work-life balance, brings its struggles with it. However, she ended the note with a positive note of embracing and taming struggles.
