Bathinda: Bus Conductor Charred to Death after Three Buses Catch Fire
In a horrific incident reported from Punjab, Bathinda, a bus conductor was charred to death in a late-night incident after three buses caught fire. The incident transpired on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. The victim of this tragic mishap was reportedly sleeping inside one of the buses when it mysteriously caught fire. The victim was later identified as Sukhwinder Sharma.
Reportedly, Sukhwinder Singh was in the bus which was parked some 40 km from Bathinda headquarters. While it’s not confirmed yet, deputy police superintendent Satnam Singh speculated that the victim may have been drunk as he couldn’t escape the burning vehicle. He was a resident of Nabha, Patiala district, Punjab.
Reportedly, locals spotted the fire and a private fire tender was rushed to the spot to fight the blazing fire. Soon, fire tenders from the administration rushed at the spot. A Tribune report states that the two buses which mysteriously caught fire belonged to the New Malwa Bus Company.
Of the three buses that were charred to nothing, two were newly bought and were yet to start plying on routes. Incidentally, even after 24 hours of the incident, the cause of the mishap has not yet been ascertained.
Background
According to the National Crime Records Bureau data, India reported as many as 3,74,397 accidental deaths with the rate of such deaths at 27.7. This is relatively low when compared against numbers from 2019, when India reported 4,21,104 deaths with a rate of accidental death as 31.4
Among all causes of accidental deaths, including forces of nature, falls, sudden deaths, and more, accidental fire accounted to 2.4% of the total deaths. India reported as many as 9,329 cases of fire accidents where as many as 9,110 persons were reported dead and 468 persons died. The country showed a decrease of 15.5% as compared to 2019 where over eleven thousand cases were reported.
If we look at the numbers on a broader level, as many as 60,507 persons died due to fire related incidents between 2015 to 2018. Moreover, 12,748 persons died in 2018, meaning an average of 35 deaths due to fire related incident every day.
Recently, Punjab’s Bathinda reported another fire related incident which claimed the life of a bus conductor.

The Facts of the Matter
A bus conductor in his mid-thirties was charred to death earlier on the night intervening Thursday and Friday at the Bhagta Bhaika bus stand located in Bathinda, Punjab. The bus conductor was sleeping on one of the three buses when the buses mysteriously caught fire and was charred to fragments hours following the spark set the bus ablaze.
Bus Driver Drunk Speculates SP
According to reports, the deceased man was identified as Sukhwinder Sharma. Superintendent of Police investigating the matter has speculated that Sharma was drunk and thus, couldn’t escape the burning bus promptly.

Private Fire Tender Rushed Before Administration
The bus conductor already succumbed to his burn injuries before locals could take him to the hospital. Meanwhile, a private fire tender, bought by locals in the area, rushed to the location before the administration fire tenders could arrive. So far, no cause of mishap has been ascertained by the investigators and the probe in the matter is still on.
2 Buses Were Newly Bought
Reportedly, two of the four buses that were damaged due to fire were bought by New Malwa Transport Company earlier this week. A third bus that was charred was a minibus while the third bus belonged to the Jassal transport service.
