Shark Tank India’s Ashneer Grover Opens Up About Wife Madhuri’s Miscarriage, Do-or-Die Situation

Recently, former Shark Tank India judge Ashneer Grover opened up about his wife Madhuri Jain’s miscarriage, and a do-or-die situation that caused him to move from Mumbai. The insightful revelations came when Grover speaking at Times Litfest 2023 Delhi as a guest speaker. The conversation was moderated by Suhel Seth, popular entrepreneur and columnist. The former BharatPe MD opened up about the turbulent part of his journey, and gave a testament of his resilience and will.

When he was asked about what made him move from Mumbai to Delhi, Ashneer Grover took the attendees of the event through a tumultuous phase of his life. Grover said that when he was working at Kotak, he and his wife Madhuri Jain used to adjust the salary. Further, he said that when his parents used to visit him, they would leave him in a few days, with taunts about living in a smaller home.

Grover said that both him and his wife started missing their families. It was then that his wife Madhuri had a miscarriage and went to Delhi to live with her family.  “I went to my office and told them about it and they let me shift back too. After that I never came back, I only kept giving them reasons and one day there was a do-or-die moment where I decided to quit Kotak,” he was quoted saying.

The Facts of the Matter

Entrepreneur turned media-personality Ashneer Grover is an embodiment of phrase – “love him or hate him, you can’t ignore him”. After a successful run of Shark Tank India season 1, Ashneer Grover became a household name as one of the most brutally honest sharks and entrepreneurs in the Indian-startup scene.

What followed next was allegations against him and his wife by the board member of the fintech startup he founded, BharatPe, his unceremonious exit from the company, and a memoir written by him called Doglapan.

Recently, Grover was called to a literature festival as a guest speaker, where he delved deep in one of the toughest phases of his early career. Grover was called to the Times Litfest 2023 Delhi where he conversed with columnist Suhel Seth.

During the conversation, Grover spilled beans about how he met his wife Madhuri Jain, his childhood, his decision to move from Mumbai to Delhi, and more.

On Leaving Mumbai for Delhi

Grover recalled working at Kotak in Mumbai after marrying Madhuri Jain. He said that while living in Mumbai, he and his wife used to adjust the salary. Further, Grover said that when his parents used to come visit them, they would return in a few days, taunting them about the small home that they lived in.

Then, Madhuri had a miscarriage and she went back to Delhi. I went to my office and told them about it and they let me shift back too. After that I never came back, I only kept giving them reasons and one day there was a do-or-die moment where I decided to quit Kotak. So when Madhuri had the miscarriage, I decided to go back to Delhi and never return,” he said.

On Finding the Love of his Life

Grover said that during his fourth year of engineering graduation, he used to go to a coaching centre in Delhi for CAT preparations. There he met Madhuri and got so enamoured by her that he repeatedly asked for a lunch date.

After Madhuri’s father came to know, he and his family went back to Panipat as Grover came from a different caste and wasn’t well off. Meanwhile, Grover shifted to Ahmedabad for his post graduation from IIM.

On Being Called a ‘Refugee’

Grover also recalled how Madhuri’s uncle was so disapproving of her marriage to Grover that he didn’t come to their wedding. Further, the uncle-in-question used to call Grover a ‘refugee’. Grover said how he hailed from Malviya Nagar thanks to his grandparents who had migrated from Pakistan.
