Kabosu, Shiba Inu Dog Which Inspired ‘Doge’ Meme, Suffering from Leukemia and Liver Disease

The pet Shiba Inu, which inspired the ‘Doge’ meme trend, is reportedly suffering from leukemia and liver disease. 17-year-old Kabosu, who lives with its pet parent Atsuko Sato, has been ailing from what could potentially be a life-threatening ailment. The matter was brought to light by Kabosu’s pet parent Atsuko, who took to Instagram to make the sad announcement.
“Kabosu’s disease names are acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma leukemia. Right now, the liver level is very bad and jaundice appears. But antibiotics will definitely improve. Kabosu has an appetite. She can also drink water. To all of you who are worried, Thank you very much”, the post read. In the post, Atsuko also shared the video of the pet Shiba Inu, who’s lying on the floor, battling with the ailments.
In another post shared earlier this week, Atsuko revealed that Kabosu has been unwell since Christmas eve, and has been not having food or drinking water. In another post, she said that the 17-year-old’s blood tests were done, and the doctor confirmed that Kabosu is in “very dangerous” condition.
For the unversed, Kabosu, a Shiba Inu, has been the inspiration for the ‘much wow, such doge’ meme. Such is the popularity of the meme, that it also inspired the popular cryptocurrency Dogecoin.
The Facts of the Matter
In 2010, a blogger by the name of Atsuko Sato, shared the picture of her pet Shiba Inu Kabosu in one of her blogs. Little did she know the wave of popularity she and her pet were going to ride on. Since 2013, Kabosu’s face became the inspiration for the now popularly known as meme ‘doge’. The picture which was initially used as the refence showed the pet dog Kabosu, with paws closed, posing for the camera, and almost giving a smirk.
The meme has been since making rounds of social media with texts that often go – “such good”, “much scare”, “so lol”, etc. Unfortunately, the popular Shiba Inu is currently suffering from what could potentially be a life-threatening ailment.

Earlier this week, Atsuko Sato, pet parent of 17-year-old Kabosu, took to social media to share an update regarding her pet’s health. “Kabosu’s disease names are acute cholangiohepatitis and chronic lymphoma leukemia. “Didn’t expect it to..”
In a post prior to the recent one, Atsuko said that her pet has been unwell since Christmas week. Some medical tests followed, and the blood reports revealed that Kabosu’s in a difficult situation. “I didn’t expect it to be that bad,” Sato further wrote. “Everyone’s prayers and power are definitely reaching the pumpkin. Thank you so much! I’m sure he’ll get better so please keep watching the comeback of my pumpkin,” the post further read.

How ‘Doge’ Became an Internet Sensation
Kabosu’s popularity came to the forefront back in 2013, when two techies created an alternative cryptocurrency and called it Dogecoin. Not only did the two techies give a nod to the popular meme, but they also chose the Shiba Inu’s face on its toke to reflect the love and affection for the Internet’s favourite ‘doge’. In 2014, the ‘meme coin’ reached its all-time high at $400 and made ‘doge’ memes one of the most popular memes in the world.
