After Hindu Teacher, Bank Manager Gunned down by Terrorists in J&K’s Kulgam, Targeted Killings Continue

In another incident of targeted killings of Hindus in Kashmir, a bank manager was gunned down by terrorists in Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The incident comes just two days after a female Hindu school teacher was killed in Kashmir’s Kulgam district. On Thursday, June 2, militants gunned down Vijay Kumar, a bank manager employed at the Ellaqui Dehati Bank (EDB) located in Kulgam’s Areh Mohanpora village. Mr. Kumar was critically injured in the horrific targeted attack and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident was confirmed by Jammu & Kashmir Police who took to Twitter and posted a tweet regarding the matter. “Terrorists fired upon a bank employee (manager) at Ellaqie Dehati Bank at Areh Mohanpora in Kulgam district. He received grievous gunshot injuries in this terror incident. He is a resident of Hanumangarh Rajasthan. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” the tweet read.

Following the incident, former J&K CM Omar Abdullah tweeted – “Former chief minister Omar Abdullah also tweeted condolences, saying “tweeting to condemn an attack & condole a death are becoming a mind-numbingly regular thing”.

At least four employees from minority communities have been gunned down in Kashmir since May. Earlier, on May 12, Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Hindu, was shot by assailants who barged into his office in Budgam.

The Facts of the Matter

Days after a Hindu female teacher was gunned down in Kulgam, J&K, a bank manager from Rajasthan was slain earlier on Thursday, June 2. The unidentified militants killed Vijay Kumar, a Hanumangarh resident who was employed at the Ellaqui Dehati Bank (EDB) by opening fire at him in Kulgam’s Areh Mohanpora village.

Mr. Kumar received critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Following the attack, the police cordoned off the area and confirmed that efforts are on to track the assailants behind the targeted attack.

Kashmir Police Confirms Attack on Bank Manager

Earlier on 11:37 AM, Kashmir Zone Police on Twitter tweeted. – “#terrorists fired upon a bank employee (manager) at Ellaqie Dehati Bank at Areh Mohanpora in #Kulgam district. He received grievous gunshot injuries in this terror incident. He is a resident of Hanumangarh Rajasthan. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow.”

Bank Manager Succumbs to Injuries

Minutes after the tweet, an update tweet by the Kashmir Zone Police read- “#KulgamTerrorIncidentUpdate: #Injured bank employee namely Vijay Kumar #succumbed to his injuries at hospital. #Search in the area going on. Further details shall follow.”

At Least 16 Targeted Killings in 2022

It should be noted that the valley of Kashmir has witnessed at least 16 targeted attacks in 2022. The victims include persons from minorities who are business owners, teachers, government officials, and even police officials.

The Recent Spate of Killings In Kashmir

Earlier on May 31, 36-year-old Kashmiri Hindu Rajni Bala, was killed in Kulgam. She was posted as a government school teacher in Kulgam and belonged to Samba district originally. On May 17, 52-year-old Ranjit Singh, was killed after terrorists threw a grenade inside a newly inaugurated wine-shop. The incident transpired in Baramulla’s Dewan Bagh area. Three more were injured in the Baramulla attack.

Similarly, on May 12, Rahul Bhat, another Kashmiri Hindu, who was employed as a cleark under the government’s special employment package was gunned down by terrorists. He was killed inside his own office in Budgam district’s Chadoora town.

On April 13, terrorists killed Kashmiri Hindu Satish Kumar Singh Rajput. Rajput was employed as a driver and was a Kulgam resident. While he was rushed to the hospital for treatment, he succumbed to the injuries following being admitted in hospital.

The same month, 39-year-old Bal Krishna Bhat, another Kashmiri pandit, was killed by militants in Shopian.
